Remanufactured 4L60E transmissions, built to outlast the original

The 4L60E is GM's electronically controlled 4-speed automatic for rear- and four-wheel-drive vehicles, used from 1993 on. The 4L65E is its heavier-duty sibling built for bigger V8s.

Picture it: your Silverado pulls a trailer up a long grade, the tach flares between 3rd and 4th, and the dash lights up. That's the classic 4L60E story, and it usually ends at the 3-4 clutch pack. Every unit below is torn down, rebuilt with new wear parts, corrected for known weak points and dyno-tested before it ships.

Signs your 4L60E is failing

Catch these early and you replace one transmission, not a transmission and a tow bill.

Slips from 3rd to 4th

The tach climbs but the truck doesn't speed up. This is the classic sign of a burnt 3-4 clutch pack.

No reverse

It drives forward fine but won't back up. Often a failed reverse input clutch or a broken sun shell.

Stuck in one gear

Limp mode after a solenoid or wiring fault. Check codes like P0700 before you condemn the unit.

Shudder at highway speed

A vibration around 40–50 mph when the torque converter locks up.

Harsh or delayed shifts

A clunk into gear or a long pause before engaging, usually from pressure or valve body wear.

Burnt, dark fluid

A burnt smell or glitter in the pan means friction material is gone and more damage is coming.

4L60E questions, answered

What vehicles use the 4L60E?

The 4L60E was used in many GM rear- and four-wheel-drive vehicles from 1993 on, including the Silverado and Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Camaro, Firebird, Corvette, S-10, Blazer, Colorado, Canyon and Hummer H3. Match your year, engine and drivetrain to the listing before you order.

What is the difference between the 4L60E and 4L65E?

The 4L65E is a heavier-duty version of the 4L60E with stronger internals, such as a 5-pinion planetary set, built for higher-torque V8s like GM's 6.0L. They look similar, so confirm your code from the transmission tag or RPO code.

What are the most common 4L60E problems?

The most common failures are a burnt 3-4 clutch pack, a broken reaction sun shell, a worn 2-4 band, torque converter shudder and solenoid faults. Symptoms include slipping between 3rd and 4th, no reverse and delayed engagement.

Is a reman 4L60E better than a rebuild?

A rebuild usually replaces only the parts that failed. A remanufactured 4L60E gets all wear parts replaced, known weak points addressed and a dyno test before it ships, and it carries a longer warranty.
