4L80E · GM HEAVY-DUTY 4-SPEED

Remanufactured 4L80E transmissions, built for real work

The 4L80E is GM's heavy-duty 4-speed automatic for rear- and four-wheel-drive trucks, vans and SUVs, used from 1991 through the early 2010s. It is also a favorite for high-horsepower LS swaps.

Picture it: a 3/4-ton Silverado with a loaded trailer, or an LS swap making twice the factory power. The 4L80E is what builders reach for when a 4L60E won't survive. Even heavy-duty boxes wear out, though. Every unit below is torn down, rebuilt with new wear parts, corrected for known weak points and dyno-tested before it ships.

Signs your 4L80E is failing

Catch these early and you replace one transmission, not a transmission and a tow bill.

Slipping under load

Clutches glaze from heavy towing and heat.

Harsh or erratic shifts

Speed sensor or solenoid faults confuse the shift logic.

Delayed engagement

Pump or forward clutch wear causes a lag before it moves.

No 4th gear

Overdrive clutch failure or a solenoid fault.

Overheating

Towing without enough cooling breaks down fluid and clutches.

Metal in the pan

Bushing or gear wear, a sign it needs to be rebuilt or replaced soon.

4L80E questions, answered

What vehicles use the 4L80E?

The 4L80E was used in GM heavy-duty trucks, vans and SUVs such as the Silverado and Sierra 2500 and 3500, Suburban 2500, Express and Savana vans and the Hummer H1. It is also widely used in LS engine swaps.

Is the 4L80E stronger than the 4L60E?

Yes. The 4L80E is a heavy-duty design built for higher torque and heavier vehicles, which is why it is popular for towing and high-horsepower builds.

Can I use a 4L80E for an LS swap?

Yes, it is a common choice for LS swaps that make more power than a 4L60E can handle. You will need a compatible transmission controller.
